This inscription is adapted from Thoreau’s book Walden, “I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” We now regard Thoreau as a pioneer of modern environmentalism. He was also a champion of the individual, and a bulwark against the Victorian obsession with social conformity as is reflected in this quotation that is widely attributed to him.
