Description
Inscribed: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference" These humble lines, with their universal message, have given comfort to many. The author of these words of wisdom, courage and inspiration is much disputed, though it is generally accredited to the American theologian Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr, perhaps in 1932. There is no shortage of other claimants, however, beginning with Cicero in ancient Rome. The wide range of claims to ownership merely reinforces the universality of the prayer.
